I never cared much for trends. Previously, in my mind, if something was “trendy” it was sure to fade quickly and leave eventual embarrassment in its wake. Why not opt for something more classic and be assured to enjoy it for years to come? Why try to impress others?
Well, I must admit I have come to appreciate keeping a pulse on styles and even trends. They expand my sense of creativity and what’s possible, make me feel connected to the community and larger society around me, and are an opportunity to strengthen my own conviction in what I find tasteful or distasteful. Besides, our individual tastes are likely not static either.
Regardless of where you stand with trends, I believe the most important thing is to have a space that makes you feel what you want to feel more of – what is that for you? Energized? Tranquil? Grateful? Admired?
Here are some of the popular trends that I’ve noticed with bathroom remodels of late.
Matte black fixtures
Matte black fixtures have a sleek and contemporary feel. They can provide a modern and sophisticated look that pairs well with a variety of color schemes. Beyond style, matte finishes are known for their durability, resisting fingerprints and watermarks, making them easier to maintain compared to glossy counterparts.
2. frameless glass
Very few modern bathrooms use framed glass enclosures. The preferred frameless design helps create a truly open and spacious feel. Frameless shower doors and mirrors contribute to a minimalist and contemporary aesthetic, eliminating the visual obstruction of bulky frames. The absence of a frame also simplifies cleaning by reducing areas where mold and soap scum can accumulate.
3. zellige tile
Zellige tiles and other rustic tile options bring a particular word to mind: artisan. Their handmade charm and unique character are perfect if you are looking for something a little bit different. I think this can be especially well-placed in a historic Tucson home. These tiles come with irregular shapes and variations in color, which add warmth and personality to bathroom spaces. The handcrafted feel introduces a sense of authenticity and a connection to traditional craftsmanship.
4. Curbless Showers
Curbless showers have emerged as a sought-after trend in bathroom remodeling. Beyond the stylish design, curbless showers provide the highest level of accessibility, particularly for those with mobility challenges. The seamless transition between the shower and the rest of the bathroom flows smoothly and creates a spa-like atmosphere. I think these are so cool, and they are perfect if you’re looking ahead to aging in place.
5. built-in shower benches
Built-in benches provide a convenient seating area within the shower, that can also double as extra storage. The design possibilities are extensive; the bench could be made to blend in or be a feature on its own. I can’t tell you the number of women who ask for this simply so they have a comfortable way to shave their legs!
6. Hexagon Tiles
Hexagon tiles have gained popularity for their geometric appeal and versatility in bathroom design. Whether used on floors or walls, hexagon tiles introduce a visually interesting pattern that adds depth to the space. This geometric shape is available in many colors and finishes and can adapt to design styles from traditional to modern.
7. Vertical stacked subway tile
The use of vertical stacked subway tiles, especially those with rustic textures, has become a prominent trend in bathroom design. This layout gives a sense of height to the walls, making the bathroom feel more spacious. The rustic texture adds warmth and character, providing a balance between classic subway tile simplicity and a more artisanal, handcrafted feel. Combine two trends and get use Zellige subway tiles in this layout for an uber-trendy bathroom! (See photo at bottom left.)
8. penny floor tiles
Penny tile floors are making a comeback. Comprising small, round tiles, this design choice adds a playful element to the bathroom, so that the floor itself is a focal point of interest. To me, penny tiles are “vintage,” but now they are available in colors and textures that would complement a contemporary bathroom as well. You can create custom patterns so the possibilities are truly endless with penny tiles. This trend brings a touch of charm and individuality to bathroom spaces, marking a departure from more typical large format tile floors.
